I don't know the answer to your question but I will say when I was using the Echo Dot and using the Hot Spot on my phone and it ate a ton of Data, I used my 4G plan in a matter of days streaming audio on my 45 minute commute each way to work. I now have a unlimited T-Mobile SIM card installed and I never even give a thought anymore.

Sorry to resurrect and hijack this post. When I log into Audi connect, under usage, I have 12GB already consumed in two weeks? Not sure where all this data is being used on? Have been enjoying Google Earth Maps. As for the SIM slot in glove compartment, if I place my extra T-Mobile sim inside, will that be for streaming music only?
