Update:

It was 60 degrees outside today. Decided to open the sunroof. At around 50 mph the sound of the wind through the open sunroof is awful. Opening some windows a crack mitigated things but I honestly expected better.

First thing that I can say I was disappointed in. I have never had an SUV with such a large sunroof. Perhaps they are all like this, but don't expect to be going 70 mph down the highway with it open.

UPDATE: Maybe it was a windy day, but I haven't noticed near as much baffling when opening the sunroof. Even at 80 mph today it was pretty good.

I have always had this issue with my BMW X5.

I think this is pretty standard on all cars.

Any car with one window (or one roof) open will always act like a Helmholtz resonator at highway speeds. The larger the window or opening, the worse the effect can be. If it makes you feel better, this is not a problem specific to the Q7 at all. I have had the same effect from various vehicles with small roof openings as well as those with large "panoramic" roof openings (X5, Touareg, SQ5, etc). Sometimes this can be mitigated by adjusting the roof opening to a more intermediate open setting, or you can just crack a 2nd window of your choice open.

You can install a sunroof wind deflector, it will cut down some wind noise.

I've always found those plastic deflectors to make the wind noise worse, not better.

That's possible, I guess it depends on how they are made and maybe the installation. I had one professionally installed on my previous MDX, and it worked well.

Nearly a 6 hour trip today. Used adaptive cruise control the entire time. Makes the driving soooo much easier. Here is the gas mileage. This is the best I have ever gotten.

This car was made for long trips.

Mine just showed a 25.3 mpg average for a 312 mile trip, averaging 75mph. Not sure how accurate it is, but happy with anything 22+. On the return trip, it was just over 21 mpg, but I encountered a lot of traffic.
