Default Options to At&T that work

Just purchased my first Audi Q7 Prestige. This forum has been very informative and helped me arrive to the decision I did. On my old Tahoe I had a Verizon hot spot called the Hum connected to the OBD port for $10 per month. Just connected to the Audi and work perfect. Going to use and let the free AT&T run it's course and after free trial going to hook back up my old devise, it's 1/2 the price and works the same.

Are you talking about the portable hot spot device that many carriers offer? I never thought about going that route but my phone does have the hotspot feature. I wonder if activating hotspot on my phone and then figuring out how to share the connection with the car would work the same. I have never enabled the car's WiFi so that devices could connect to it and use the internet, but would it work the other way around?

Not sure if that would work the way you are describing. Once in a while I use my laptop computer and wireless printer in the car. They both need to be connected to the same network to function correctly. I also need the wifi in the car to work so my escort radar can connect to it. The radar updates automatically for any speed traps and red light camera's.

Attached is the devise I use to connect to the obd port

I am interested to know how this device would work when connected to the OBD? Is it using OBD port for power and that's it and does WiFi separate or when connected to the Audi ODB port it provides WiFi via the MMI/Audi connect screen, etc. Let me know specifically how it's working for you in the Q7. BTW is the $10/month unlimited plan?

Thanks in advance.

It is just using the OBD port for power only. The device supplies it's own wifi and has nothing to do with MMI/Audi connect screen. Just checked my bill to see my data limits and it's caped around 30 gig for the multiple devices I have. Looks like my price went up last month. Was $10 a month now it's $15. I would check with who ever you have an account with for pricing. I would think that most major carriers would carry the device.

Don't people root their phones for free hotspot anymore? I have hotspot with my phone so I don't need the wifi from my Q7, it's the dam "Google Earth Maps" that I want, and unfortunately, there is no way to get this feature without audi connect.

Some carriers, like Sprint, have ways to check for hotspot usage on your phone. If it's not on your plan, but you still manage to bypass it, they will add it to your bill.

My phone is running on a beta update from over a year ago and one of the bugs was that turning data off, hot spot on, then data back on would give you hot spot access. Still haven't seen a charge on my bill but updates since then have patched that loophole.

Also, I like Samsung and Google Pay, so no root for me.

Getting off topic from op, but I have sprint with S8 rooted. I have unlimited data plan. I use hotspot all the time. Haven't been charged yet for over 5 years.

I read somewhere you can use vagcom or obdeleven to allow you to use other carriers and not go through Audi. I don't remember where I saw it.
