Default Pre-Sense Plus - Question

Hi All,

Any know if Audi has plans to bring Pre-Sense - Plus to the US? I am referring to the semi-autonomous drive at higher speeds > 50mph. Volvo, I believe is updated the Pilot Assist to v2 for 2017 xc90 models and will be semi-autonomous to up to 80 mph.

My one concern is that it still needs to read the lines on the road so I'm not sure how effective it will be in certain areas in the US. I have seen a number of auto-pilot demos for the Tesla X which also reads the lines on the road and it worked really well in the are they were in.

Thanks,

J

Audi has some kind of legal or certification issues with auto pilot and active parking system in US. At least what sales dude told us. Car is capable of auto piloting and parking, all sensors and computing power are there, but they disabled them for US.

The autopiloting on the current Q7 definitely works up to, I think, 90 mph. I put the adaptive cruise control with lane control on at 80 mph all of the time (when my hands are off the wheel the car is driving itself). It will drive the car until you are prompted to touch the wheel again (all too soon). If you are referring to the automatic braking for objects that are stopped in the roadway, that is a different feature than auto pilot.

As for the stopping, although I know that the safety system doesn't automatically stop above a certain speed, if you are using the adaptive cruise control and the distance is set back far enough it will react to stopped objects in the road and brake the vehicle until it stops. I have had it brake the vehicle at speeds up to 60 mph for a stopped car at a red light. I do notice that this doesn't work as well if you narrow the distance that the adaptive cruise control tolerates (or at least it is way too scary for me to trust it).

As far as I know, the technology behind the auto-pilot in Tesla is the same as in Q7. The technology provided by Mobileye using the monocular camera to detect various objects and lanes. There are bunch of youtube videos on how the technology works.

There may be regulatory hick ups or Audi just do not want to enable it for safety reasons. Remember, the Tesla buyers are more tech savvy(they say) to handle beta software.

There is one big advantage for Tesla though, if something goes terribly wrong, they can push software updates overnight to resolve issue, Audi can't.

This is great to know. I was definitely referring to the auto piloting of the car - similar to the Tesla functionality. I hope Audi gets the certification for US and can enable us as well. With Volvo also up the stakes, I hope they are actively pursuing it. Are you in EU or CA?

Thanks,

J

Its doesn't? Per the Mobileye presentation, they are able to recognize over 1000 signs.

It at least recognized the school zone sign I just drove past during a recent test drive... at least according to the yellow "school" icon on the HUD...

It does have traffic sign recognition on US spec cars if you get the driver's assistance package. Stop signs just are not one of the signs it displays. It displays speed limits, no passing zones, construction zones, and school zones.
