Well, I learned something new. (I do get pretty accurate speed limits on my A6 nav screen).

I may be wrong - but I think it knows it's in a school zone from the navigation data base - not by reading a sign. A portable Garmin GPS I use in rental cars tells me I'm in a school zone & it doesn't have a camera.
I noticed that School Zone sign in my HUD the other day & thought that was cool & wondered how it knew until I thought about it

Actually, that makes sense. Would be no different from other data from the map (and traffic?) info and much less expensive than providing hardware and software to read signs. Same as with speed limit data that all NA Nav Plus Audis have had for several years.

Easy to put a sticker on that Camera and drive through a school area to prove this theory.

I am pretty sure it sees the sign. It changes almost right at the sign itself.

Not sure that proves it's reading the sign. My speed limit icons are from the database and change very close to a new speed limit sign.

It sees the signs. If you have cruise control set to adjust to speed limit it can accidentally pick up off ramp signs.

Camera based traffic sign recognition overwrites speed limits and other signs included in the navigation data. If there is no detected sign then nav data takes over.

Is there a specific U.S. published source for this or is there just a lot of guessing?
