Programming craftsman garage door without handheld remote

I have craftsman garage door with no handheld remote. I am trying to program my Q7 homelink, but it keeps asking to use the handheld remote which I don't have. I have tried to use the learn button on the opener and tried to syncronise with the homelink unsuccessfully. The MMI screen is stuck on using the handheld remote screen. Do I need the handheld remote from Craftsman here? I do have a 3rd party remote purchased from Homedepot but that did not help.

Weird...if the 3rd party remote (I assume a universal type remote) works on the opener, I would think it should also work on the programming of the button. I'm pretty positive you must use a handheld remote in the process.
