Default proper placement of chains ?

ive been reading conflicting info on where to place chains and/or traction devices on our cars. is it the front or rear? have checked the manual and unless i missed it, there is no guidance of where to install the chains.
for california roads, generally we are ok under chain restricted areas to drive w/out chains under R1, R2 as long as you have a 4wd or awd equipped with mud and snow rated tires but we are required to carry some sort of traction device in the event road conditions worsen to an R3.
thanks in advance.

There is info on them in page 341 (2019 manual). It says front tires only and certain tire/rim combinations shouldn't use chains but doesn't list which those are, and warns against using chains if air suspension isn't working.
