Default Tires getting louder?

Am I going nuts? I now have a tic over 20,000 miles on my Q. The thread left on the tires is fine. Actually still look almost new. But... I have never heard the tires before. But for about the last 3000 miles, I swear I can hear the roar of the tires as I drive down the road. Plus, it seems to be getting louder. Anyone else have this issue? Don't really want to buy new tires while these are still good. But it seems to me like it is getting louder and louder. If it continues at this pace I won't be able to hear the radio soon.

Yup. It happens to most tires and particularly noticeable on the heavier cars.

You can drop a few pounds of air out of them, it helps a little.

At 15000 miles my Pirelli's are so loud I thought I had a wheel bearing going out. Seriously, they are louder than the tires on my Tacoma.....never seen tires get this loud this quick.

Yes, practically all tires get louder as they age and the treads wear off. Some gets louder than others, but all of them will to some degree.

When I took my Q7 in for the 20K service, I asked the dealer the same question and they said that all the tires are feathering and it's normal for this car. He suggested replacing them for 450 each. Fortunately my brake pads are still good.

I'm having the exact issue. I also don't think these tires will last past 30k miles. I don't drive the car that hard either.

How much air pressure are people putting in their tires? I keep mine at 32psi. I have 10k on my Pirellis and they are a little louder, but not too bad in my opinion. If you are putting 36psi in your tires that may be part of the issue. In addition to the tread wear the rubber compound does get harder over time and contributes to increased noise transfer.

It is normal, however an unhappy fact, that all permanent 4X4 vehicles usually require a new set of tires on average every 25K miles. Safety and drive stability come at a price - which I am willing to pay.

P.S. I usually keep tire pressure ~3PSI above sticker values.

I think it depends on the wheel/tire size... I have the 21", Audi recommends 38 Front / 41 Rear... I keep them about 1 PSI over... Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S... ~2K on the ODO Still quiet, but still very new!
