Turn off engine and check coolant level (x5)
Just had our 2017 Q7 towed back to the dealer due to this message on the dash at startup:

But... this is the 5th time for our Q7 (having first occurred in September last year) and we can't even seem to get 1K trouble-free miles anymore.

We have a summer roadtrip coming up and don't think we can trust our Q7 not to strand us...
Any thoughts on where to go from here? Our Service Advisor has been nothing but sympathetic and helpful but all they can do is fix it each time and send us on our way...

What does "fixing" each time mean? Clearing the code only flies for the first time.
Beyond that they need to be testing and replacing sensors if the coolant level is correct or looking for and fixing leaks if it actually is low.

I smell citrus in the air... lemons perhaps?
Seriously though, I would not be a happy camper.
I would demand they start doing some serious troubleshooting on the coolant system and/or sensors.

I suppose I'll find out tomorrow what the problem was this 5th time.
+1 to the question as to what they are fixing. I'm about to have mine to the dealer the 2nd time because I smell coolant. The first time they said they couldn't find it, even after pressurizing. Now it seems like I have a very very slow loss of coolant, but, now warning messages or lights. I'm due for service in about 1500 miles. And I"m with you, nothing worse than a) regularly smelling coolant and b) not knowing when whatever is currently a tiny leak becomes a big one.....
I'll be asking to review all the detailed records for the past 5 "fixes" to see what exactly was wrong and what they did to fix it when I hear from our SA tomorrow.

Since your Q7 is 2017, it is probably not qualified for CA's Lemon law. If it is within 18 months since you purchase the car, and the "same" issue has been fixed at least 4 times without success (or total service time in the shop is more than 30 days), then you are qualified for the Lemon Buy Back under the law.
I had the coolant leak about 2 months ago and it was fixed. There are a few people in the forum reported that they had coolant leak again after the initial fix. I am worried about the re-occurrence as well.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you have a better resolution and don't have recurring coolant loss like we're dealing with.
I've been looking into this as we are 3 years into a 4 year lease but the thought of 11 more visits for coolant issues over the remaining final 12 months (given our current trend of 4 visits in 5 months) is making me seriously consider retaining some legal assistance...
By the way, I keep hearing what you've posted (in bold above)... but numerous legal sites say otherwise (https://www.bickellawfirm.com/califo...emon-law-faqs/):
Yeah, we have had no symptoms or warnings that we were losing coolant (no smells, no visible leaks or puddles of coolant on the driveway). Everything is fine and then suddenly, warning pops up in the morning as my wife is loading kids for school and we have to scramble to figure out how we're dealing with transportation for the day...
Will be calling our SA in a few hours to see if I can get an update... at least they got us into a replacement Q7 loaner while they figure this out (again)!
Sorry to hear that.

Can I have a claim under the California Lemon Law if my repair visits did not occur within the vehicle’s first 18 months and 18,000 miles of use?
Yes, the California Lemon Law does not require that the repair visits occur within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles of use. If your repair visits occurred within the warranty period, you will be afforded the protections of the California Lemon Law. Largely due to the misrepresentations of the automobile manufacturers and car dealerships, there has been much confusion surrounding a provision of the CA Lemon Law called the Tanner Consumer Protection Act. As such, many consumers are left with the mistaken impression that they have no remedy under the California Lemon Law unless their repair visits occurred within the vehicle’s first 18 months or 18,000 miles of use. The truth is that you may have a very strong California Lemon Law claim even if your problems occurred well after 18 months and 18,000 miles.
