View cameras while in drive?

Is there a way to manually switch on the external cameras while the car is in drive, such as while pulling into a parking spot or garage? So far it seems the camera system only switches on while in reverse.

Push the P button. It will only work when almost stopped and go off as soon as you drive. The P button in under the screen to the right of the other hard buttons.

Hit the P^ button on dash for on-demand camera action.
Otherwise, your parking sensors and cameras should come on in tight parking spot, if you are hearing beeps but no camera (aside from top view graphic bug), get it checked.

They’re set to shut off at a certain speed. I increased the speed to 20 mph on mine and that is the max.

How is this adjusted?

Vagcom should allow you to alter the max mph. That's the only way I know of

Use OBDEleven

Increase the speed at which parking assist turns off
  1. 09/Central Electric
  2. Adaptation
  3. Switch off spd for park assist
  4. 20 (old value 10)

BTW, that's in k/hr, so the top limit is about 12mph.

hayde_bre 02-10-2019 08:24 PM

In what situations would any driver need to have camera on while going over 10mph?

lapi 02-11-2019 10:44 AM

None :-) but, it would be extremely useful if they allow to record that Front, Rear and 360 footages to an SD card or USB drive. Oh well, they may, at some point in future!

When I test drove the Porche Maccan I think I remember the guy turned on all the camera's on the highway it was ... distracting.
That said I really don't see a use for the front/360 cameras (maybe reduce blind spots?), but the rear camera could be useful even at highway speeds for a rearview particularly if your packed to the gils and render the mirror useless.

That's an interesting usage I didn't consider but I am not sure if it can be really useful since these cameras distort the vision horribly.
I know there are some cars that are designed to use cameras to support (not completely replace) side view mirrors, even some low end Toyotas or Nissans (seen some in an uber/lyft I took) have this and their usefulness is debatable, but those are dedicated cameras for that purpose.

Other than it being distracting, I suspect that turning the camera display on while driving also qualifies as "video visible to driver" and is disallowed by law, depending on the state and interpretation: https://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/video-screens/.

In addition to VCP, you can change the "Parking assist switch off speed" up to 20 km/h via OBD11.

I have tried to change this today with OBDeleven and it didn't work. Any idea?
