A few quick questions.

Can my car connect to a mobile WiFi hotspot? If so, what service/features does that afford me?

Is there a way to use Apple CarPlay without having the phone hooked up via USB?

With the car set up as a WiFi hotspot (setup through MMI with hotspot initiated), does that require a SIM card to be of any use, or does/can that WiFi connection function like a bluetooth connection for the car and phone to communicate?

1) Not sure, but dont think so

3) No, phone communicates/interfaces via BT

Regarding 1). I think you can but you may need to use OBD11 or other device to enable the wifi hotspot client. See details in the thread "Guide: Enable Google Earth/Traffic on Canada spec Audi"

I thought you can connect carplay via bluetooth? In the iphone settings there's a note about wireless carplay, does the Q7 support it? I haven't tried because I'm totally underwhelmed by carplay and don't use it.

Unfortunately not. Very few cars support wireless CarPlay at the moment. BMW 5 series in the only one I'm aware of?

Moot point for me since I don't like carplay and I generally plug my phone in anyways.

Has anyone tried this on the Q7? I tried to enable wifi client mode few months back but was not successful. I will try again with the instructions provided in the above thread to see if I did anything wrong.

It's not a killer app by any means but has its uses. More often that not I don't plug it in as you can get to Siri via the long press on the steering wheel but it is good for music, particularly if you have an Apple Music subscription. Not sure if the voice commands work so well on amazon music or Spotify.
