I'm beginning to have to pick and choose between stereo, air, etc. for the car to stay on, so you know what that means...
Whats the number on an 83 WX alternator?

Are you sure that the problem is the alternator?
The problem most often lies elsewhere in ur qs, like the battery cable splice, exciter (blue) wire/connection or fuse block.
If it is the alternator, I would first check the brushes. When they get very worn, they will often result in inconsistent charging. The good thing is that they only cost about $5, and you can change them without pulling the alternator.
All in all, I would bet 60% wiring, 40% alternator, and if it is the alternator, 75% that a set of brushes will cure it.
Oh yeah, the part number. 068 903 017 E

Only replace it with a BOSCH rebuilt unit.
I replaced a working but noisy alternator last year with a rebuilt unit from a local parts place. I've replaced it three times (under warranty) already this year! I finally broke down and purchased a BOSCH rebuilt unit. I guess because where the alternator is located on our cars, it gets wet from rain and snow. Most rebuilt units won't last long in the urq's.
