Default ball joint question

i have an early '83 UrQ (slotted control arm/ straight hole ball joint)and ball joints are very expensive and hard to find, it would b cheaper to buy the later style lower control arm and ball joints(slotted ball joints/ straight hole control arm). is this a direct swap?
and is it the same as the setup on my old style where the front and back are the same just swapped left to right?
i know this has been talked about before but the search is not currently working for me.

Default I vaguely remember someone on MG mentioning a Porsche 944 piece fitting...

I'll try to find that for you.

Default Hi Rich, you can swap to the newer style however those ball joints are also getting hard to find....

If you don't care about originality the best bet is to convert to newer style arms and at the same time drill out the strut to 19mm and use the 2-bolt 90 quattro ball joints.
Also, when upgrading the control arms you have to upgrade the sway bars as well.

Hope this helps.

Default Nope, the only thing that fits are the dust boots, the ball joints are competely different style...

and it's early 944 ball joint, the later units are part of the control arm itself (alloy)

Default don't care much 'original', sounds good on the 90 quattro ball joints....

i think i saw them for like $12. just so i understand it, i must upgrade both sway bars or is it leave the back one off like the newer ones and repossition the rear tie rods?

i just wanna finish up and drive the thing already, keep finding stuff i wanna change or have to fix. after i bought it i thought i would just find a spoiler and put the stock wheels and springs back on. silly me.

Default yep, that was me. The dust boots fit from the 944. So if one is broken

Replacing the boot right away can prolong the life of the joint..

Default Re: Here is one easy option

$125 for 2 $20 ball joints and a drill bit. just ad the word urquattro to the title of the kit to figure where the extra $$$ goes
