Default Found something interesting about my Urq (long)....

While I was taking apart the dash/glove box of my Urq so I could do the dash swap, I had a look at the ECU. To my surprise, it has a two labels on it that make me think my car has been chipped, or something to that effect.
One of the labels says "Bruno's VW/Audi" and the other says "Reprogrammed by Detection Techniques LTD Buckingham, England"
I did a search and found that Bruno's VW Audi is a garage in Queens, NY (where my car is originaly from) and heres what I found about the Detection Tech. LTD label-
""Detection Techniques
Buckingham Industrial Park
Buckingham
MK18 1XJ
tel (0280) 816781 or 815838
fax (0280) 816764
These are one of the 2/3 chip specialists for a huge range of cars
Superchips: eg VW Golf Rallye G60 (corrado ??)
- 195 bhp 350 pounds plus VAT & fit
A name that's survived well in the chipping set
plus other tuning.""

Although I have only driven my car on the road twice (the 1st time, the boost pressure blew the turbo~intercooler hose off, the second time was great though!), It seems quite fast.
But it may just seem fast because my Coupe GT was so slow... Also, my engine was very clean when I bought the car, and there were a lot of new-looking parts on it. Along with the engine compartment looking so nice(it was really clean, under all the pollen, no leaks, greasy spots, etc), I noticed the engine block is bright red. Were the engine blocks on our WX engines Red?? (see the 4th picture)
All of this leads me to believe that the engine has been modded, or rebuilt, or something like that.
Finding out what exactly has been done to this car will be hard, I bought the car from a guy who bought it from a salvage auction in Indiana, and I have no records from the previous owner :\

Does anyone know what exactly to look for to see if anything has actually been done to my engine, performance wise?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Happy hollidays everyone- BrittM

Default You could call Bruno...I spoke with him a couple years ago about a front spoiler

Its worth a shot..he may be able to give you a few answers. The only external mods that would be visible would be the wastegate cap;look at the top center and see if it looks like its plugged(stock), or if theres a deep set allen head screw in there, or a bolt with a lock nut sticking up. Another would be the exhaust manifold, as well as a banjo fitting on the water neck leading into the head telling you it has a water cooled turbo.
If you have a boost gauge(dial type) other than stock, see if you can give us a reading. Anything higher than 12 would indicate ECU mods.

Default Now that I have time to answer your questions.

The first thing I would do if I were in your shoes is to contact Bill Bremer if you haven't yet doneso. He might be able to relay some information about your car as he is the caretaker of the urq registry. His email address is wbr>removethis<emer@maine.rr.com

Secondly, I would contact Bruno Kreibich.
Since he installed the chip and possibly sold the PO the chip package. He can almost certainly shed some light on what has been done to the car.

I would speculate that the chip was probably installed back in the late 80s.

If your hoses keep coming apart, I can send you some pictures of the thrust flange w/ dbl threaded nut setup on my car which will completely take car of that without relying on the hose clamp to do all the work.

Default Re: OEM blocks are black.

Ok thanks for the info everyone. I contacted Bill Bremer @ the Urq registry, and he gave me some good info that cleared some things up, but still didn't help me with what has been done to my engine. So I gave Bruno Kreibich at Bruno's quattro Center a call, and he couldn't help me without the name of the original owner. And I have no clue who the original owner is, nor does Bruno. Bill should be checking into the orig owner's name for me. When I get some info, I'll be sure to post another thread to update you about it.

Regards,
Britt M
