Default There is no need to drop the transmission to fix it. It isn't easy, but it can be done.

You might want to verify where exactly your play is coming from. IME, if the play is at the ball and socket at the selector shaft arm, it is the machined steel ball getting loose from the cast iron selector arm that can cause most of the problem. This must be welded or replace to repair. Also check the arm that goes from the top of the linkage laterally to the ball on the top of the transmission. Those sockets wear, and the good thing is that you can replace just the socket inserts and the parts are fairly inexpensive.

Default Heim joint upgrade...

Although the linkage setup is somewhat different between the CGT & the URQ, it was that same issue with the ball socket on my CGT that prompted my heim joint upgrade. I was helping pull the tranny on my friends URQ this week and they use the same ball & socket (crap) design.

Never gonna be a problem for me again, and could be done similarly on 4KQ & URQ. Just cut off the socket, thread the shaft and replace with a heim joint. Then cut off the ball and replace with a bolt and nylock nut. Not gonna come off unless you want it to.

J.
