it's got heated seats for the winter but no a/c for the summer, was a/c an option that wasn't ordered on this car?

Many of us have performed the A/C Delete - "Upgrade". It makes getting to the leaking heater core easier.
I think it was standard equipment, check to see if the coils are still mounted under the glovebox.
The original York A/C compressor is a bit outdated, heavy, and a drag on the engine.
The old wiring and relays for the A/C on high radiator fan are a serious drag on the already "challenged" Rabbit electrical system.
Good luck, sounds like you are having fun already.

You have to look for the body differences... hole in the firewall (pass side) for the pipes...
and the air plenum box and matching hole for the evap unit (under the white plenum box). Non A/C cars do not have the white box in the plenum area.. just a simple screen for the fresh air fan.

Re: I can't find any trace of a/c components anywhere
I don't remember any A/C switch on the controls, when I deleted my A/C. If I remember correctly, the A/C was switched on when the temp lever was full cold position, the recirc door was activated at the same time.

correct, there shold be a micro switch just under the dial to change the speed of your heater fan...
...pull the heater/fan panel off and you'll see the micro switch at the coldest postion of your temp control.
