Well, got the parts car stripped so all the goodies are ready for the eventual UrQ Resto

Posted in the 4k forum. Took 4 back breaking days w/ 3 of us hard at work, but we got it done.

There is carnage w/o a doubt......

Rest of the parts will be stored away until we start stripping the Ur down and prepping it to get acid dipped :)

Silly question

What color are you planning for the Urq?

Nice job on the teardown. LMK about the speakers and dash...

BTW you don't need to ship them, I can pick them up- I'm up in Quakertown every few weeks.

WTF??? Original, Original, Original...!!!!!!!! shame on you Mike...

I assume that if you are going to acid dip, you are going to dip prime as well, correct?

If not, it WILL rust. If you cannot dip prime, you are much better off blasting (media/soda/etc.) than to acid dip. It would be impossible to spray prime an acid dipped car and get it totally covered. IMO, it is also nearly impossible to totally neutralize and clean out all of the chemicals from something as complex as an ur quattro chassis.

I too considered acid dipping, but after talking to several restorers, and actually had a sample panel dipped (a hardtop for my Triumph) to test, I decided it would be MUCH better to blast the car. Due to the type and quantity of paint on my car, I chemically stripped most of the car and had the jams and engine compartment media blasted. It really wasn't a bad job.

HTH!

Well

I was just asking. Im hoping original too, trust me :)

Of course Justin has fantastic taste, but I didnt know (or missed) if he was keeping the original color or not.

Acid dip speeds things up but

I witnessed much rust in later life in rally cars that were acid dipped. That is why almost nobody acid dips rally cars any more. Media blasting is recomended. Acid dipping companies are becoming very rear these days.
Great project. I hope you finde time to finish it.

I'd like to keep it the Helios blue...

as would my dad. We just need to get my brother on board and we're golden. he's lusting after a red one, but after the PO of the CGT told me dad how few Helios made it here, that might have swayed my dad enough to beat on my brother :-P

YGM last night... they're yours...

and pickup works great... or I'm in b-more every now and again and would be willing to meet up with ya. Either works for me.

Game plan is to have it dipped/soaked in an epoxy primer once dipped, yes...

Figured having it dip primed was as close to galvanizing the car as you could get... and given how much these cars like to rust, I'd like to seal every nook and cranny to help fight this.

The dipping came as the recommendation from the body guy who has done a lot of hot-rod restorations. He was highly against media blasting b/c of all the sand in every nook and cranny. He said it was dip it or he sanded it.

Guy does amazingly nice work. When my dad and I talked to him, he had a '57 Chevy he had done up... all black (which looked like glass) and enough chrome under the hood to light up a dark night. Absolutely beautiful car. Said the owner was contemplating sending it to the barrett-jackson auction.
