When doing a tranny swap where the final drive is changed...
The rear diff only needs to be changed out, right, to match the center ratio? Why wouldn't the front need replacement as well? Am I just not thinking? The physics logic has me a bit stymied...can someone straighten me out?
Thanks,

You are correct. There are 3 diffs.
The front one is contained it the trans, as snoogins said. The center diff is bolted onto the rear of the transmission, and, well, obviously the rear is in the rear.

Gotcha...thanks chef. I didn't realize that center AND front were all in the "tranny" assembly.
Like most other later models... I'm on track now.

It has nothing to do with the center diff.
There are two final drive ring and pinion sets, one in the transmission for the front axle and one rear diff for the rear. These must match. The center differential has nothing to do with the final drive ratio.
If you want to switch to say 4:11 final drives, you need to either have the front ring and pinion changed, which is difficult or just swap the transmission. Then you need the 4:11 rear diff to match.

center rear jacking point? Front is on jackstands, need to get the rear up. Diff case strong enough?
