Default New to Audi: Door won't open

Hi,

Just purchased a 1988 Audi 90 Quattro for my son. I went to lock the door today from the inside and pushed on the lock too hard. Something made a "snap" sound and the door now won't unlock. The key moves the door lock pull up and down, but the door won't unlock. Any ideas on what went wrong.

I had the door panel off earlier in the day to look at the window motor, so I am familiar on how to remove the panel. However, can it be removed with the door closed?

I am used to working on old British cars, so "modern" Germans are new to our garage.

Thanks,
Todd

Obviously something broke. You need a Bentley Manual to see how to get to everything. I checked my Bentley on the Audi 90 but it did not include your car. One local person here in Loveland (Ryan Levy) knows the most about the 80s so you are lucky. PM me and I will send you his email address.

I took the car to the local body shop and they spent several hours messing with it. They were very cool and didn't charge me as they couldn't get it opened. They suggested calling Audi. I contacted Ed Carroll and they said the only way to get to whatever broke was to remove the door panel which is not designed to come off with the door closed... They are not in the business of breaking things to fix them, so they respectfully declined working on the car until the panel was off...

Frustrated, I went into the garage and gave the panel a hard tug. The top came away from the door and I was able to stick my hand down in the door and wiggle some stuff. The door popped open. After some trial and error, I figured out that it was the interior door handle cable getting hung up on the door lock. Now it works like a charm! And the door panel is no worse for the wear!
