They’ll be back, just like roadsters were when the Miata showed up 30 years ago. Why should Mercedes own the market with the E450 wagon and AMG E63? If they still had the S6 Avant in 2013, I wouldn’t have bought the sedan and sold it 3 years later. And i’ll drop the SQ5 like a hot potato for an Avant.

Although for those who know, how would an RS6 differ from an S6? When I bought the S6 in 2013 the RS5 seemed like it was more sport and less luxury features. Like an upscale sound system and other comfort oriented stuff, or things like color choices. Although I did quite like the grill they came with.
Very unfortunately, most of that is incorrect.

The trend to SUV is accelerating, not declining. Everywhere. For all manufacturers. Including Mercedes, who have just released their 2018 global sales data. Everything is down, except SUVs. Even in Europe, where the infrastructure in most urban areas does not support huge, fat vehicles, in terms of road width and parking spaces. Although most of the growth there is in mid sized or smaller SUVs - but even if they are shorter, they are still excessively wide, and cause problems.

But then cars like the A6 Avant or E class t-wagon are also regarded as very large vehicles, and not that common. This segment, along with coupés, is declining very rapidly.

You can't really compare S and RS models from different model classes. The C7 A6 series was a more refined platform than the B8 A4/A5 series. That's how all the Germans roll - as you go up in series, it is not just size but also refinement that goes up as well. Although least obvious in BMW at the time because they were so aggressive on parts sharing as a means of lifting margins.

In the old days, going back to when Audi Sport was quattro GmbH, they made one model at a time, all at Neckarsulm, and then only over a limited production period, usually close to the end of life for that series. Then, there were very few options available on the RS vehicle, and the focus was very much on dynamics and not on luxury.

The new C8 RS6 will have everything the S6 has, in terms of features. Less colour choices, less interior colour choices, but all the other options will be there. RS models are now more like a standard production car in terms of how they are built, and how they are featured - with the RS stuff added in.

But a lot of people may say they want the car, but then when faced with a $120,000+ purchase price, not sure how many would actually buy it.

I’d spend 120+on a Range Rover or Cayenne/Panamera/E63s wagon so even with that price it’ll be competitive with viable alternatives. Looking for something that’s not an SUV. I see about 6 Range Rovers a day.*
