I sent a question off to Audi asking the question:

"Does Amsoil 5W40 European Car Formula meet the Audi 502 00 specification for warranty purposes?"

Here's the answer I received in reply:

"Thank you for contacting Audi of America. A complete list of engine oils meeting the standards for Audi vehicles is available on our website. I did not find the oil name you specified in that list, which includes US brands and foreign brands as well, but I have attached the list for your review."

Syntec 5W40 and Mobil 1 5W40 still on the list.

Yep. You just need to be sure that the Mobil 1 5W-40 you use has 502 on the label.

You're thinking of a euro mobil 5w40, not the stuff we get over here.

but it has been discontinued. i haven't seen the replacement 'mobil 1 5w-40 turbo diesel truck' in stores yet, but it's the same thing. it's also identical to Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40.

fyi, GI Joe's here in Seattle has the 5W-40 turbo diesel truck, in 4L containers too.
