Default Advanced Information on Renewable Lubricants Biosynthetic Oil (RLI Biosyn)

Since Dave has brought up interesting points about vegetable-based oil, I thought it might be good to provide one thread as a resource for RLI Biosyn, where I post some technical papers and presentations about the technology.

Here are links to recent data on the oil and underlying technology.

Default No

There are quite a few RS4 owners who use RLI Biosyn 5W40 HD in their engines, after I had it professionally formulated. I posted this to get factual information about the oil out there to the community

Default Interesting stuff, Scott.

Bio oils definitely have their benefits. Do you see them being widely adopted by the auto industry?

Per the BioSyn data sheet everything looks pretty good. The flash point and MRV TP-1(stress test) are a little on the low side for a 40W though.

Default I do see bio oils being accepted by the industry

My sources tell me that all of the majors are trying hard to replicated RLI's performance. Valvoline has a huge research program going on in Korea. The problem the majors are having is RLI's patents. They have not yet found a way to get around their patents successfully.

If you look at the Scanning Brookfield low temperature viscosity testing, performed at Chevron Philips, all of their formulations show no gelation, even down to -40 C. The 15W40 oil is of a similar formulation to the 5W40 I had formulated, and the SAE 40 that I sometimes use. They will show similar performance for low temperature usage. The 5W40 will also look 15W-40 in terms of deposit formation.

Default I tend to agree, but it will take time

If they have to license certain patents from RLI that would be huge for RLI. It's tricky business though...major oil companies getting around the patents, but also enforcing patents against the big boys.

Why would you use the straight 40w at times?
