Default Am I the only one that thinks this...

I posted this under a prior thread, but thought that this should get its own special consideration.

I believe Audi should get rid of the S and RS designations and just make only one "sport" model. It would really cut down on the confusion as to which of the Audi's we should be comparing to the BMW M3.

I wish they would just call the S4 an A4 4.2 and leave the S or RS designation for the current RS4 (either it be the "S4" or "RS4").

I think that would really make the highest echelelon model that much more special. Just my two lousy cents.

Default It makes plenty of since, and I agree up to a point.

The RS designation has always been a very special car to my knowledge, so it never bothered me that Audi had RS cars. If, and I really do believe it's a big if (the B8 chassis is due in 2008 model year) the RS4 continues production after 2007 model year, then you're right about only having either an S or an RS. I don't know what the answer is. And I do realize that in other parts of the world the RS6 was made for more than one year. I guess I am hoping that Audi decides to stop production of the RS4 after to 2007 so the car keeps its exclusitivity.
I honestly believe that the RS4's closest competitor is the one everyone keeps overlooking. The Audi S4. Everyone wants to pit the RS4 against the M3, because it's faster and it can handle better in some points. I don't see the comparison. The M3 has 2 doors, a six cylinder engine, and the interior looks like something Fisher Price would make. The S4 has 4 doors, 8 cylinders, and the interior is extremely nice, if not just about the same. Just my 2 cents. I just sold my S4 right before getting my RS4 and I have owned 3 M3's.

Default Don't get me wrong...

I bleed Audi through and through, I have owned 4 audis since 1996, I used to be a member of audiworld when this website was A4.org. I also believe the current s4 is much better than the M3. I understand the significance of the RS designation, but I think if Audi keeps expanding out one model range, the importance of the RS designation is diluted somewhat.

Default Kind of like Mercedes and their alphabet soup of models

I don't even know which model is which anymore. I definitely see your point. )

Default if they combined the S4 and RS4 product lines, quattro GmbH would have to expand.

right now they can't build that many cars. Their capacity is far below that of M or AMG.

Default i tend to agree and almost hope that certain models don't get the rs designation ..

imho, an rs model should never see more than one model year; i am very much opposed to the MY08 rs4. now there's talk of an rs3?? an rs model, in my opinion, ought to the basis of homologation for motorsports.

Default I don't think Audi is even close to being that bad yet..

I agree that RS and S should remain seperate. S is the constantly available high-end sport model. RS is the once in a while get it while you can model.

They should not be combined, and if not for that reason, then for the reason that Quattro division should have less to do so they can achieve more quality.

Default The point is NOT to have a direct competitor.

I think their approach is sound. Though I also think that their RS4 cars need more guts. S4 is special, RS4 should be out of this world.

How do you define "out of this world?"
