Default Re: anyone know which fuse to pull to disable the airbags?

Airbag control module - fuse 11 at left of instrument panel

Side airbags - fuse 1 underneath left and right front seats.

Default I haven't done it myself ... but that is the sole function of those fuses

Pulling them should not affect any other system.

Default I like my airbags! It's one of the safety features I'd be happy to never use.

But as a public service it was easy enough for me to look up the fuse locations in Bentley.

Default but what about on the track. I am not talking about disabling them for good, but

if you have a full face helmet and the airbag deploys you will probably need to bring your jaw to the body shop

Default Hmmm ... a little research

It seems to me that the only way I would choose to disable the airbags at a track event would be if, and only if, I was in a car with a full harness system and roll cage. Otherwise, I think I'll continue to opt for a full face helmet and airbags. Even the SCCA cannot make up it's mind on this one. They chose not to issue a regulation about full face helmets and airbags.

In 2004 the following came out in an SCCA bulletin

DATE: November 16, 2004

It has been brought to the attention of SCCA Technical Services that the use of full-face or closed-face helmets while driving vehicles with active airbag restraint systems may result in injuries in the event of a crash that deploys
the airbag. Because of the location of the steering wheel relative to a driver's position, the airbag axis is on a level with the driver's chin. In a crash with airbag deployment, contact with the chin area of a full-face helmet can be so powerful "that the risk of fractures to the jaw cannot be ruled out" (Hubert Gramling, FIA Institute, FT3/AF, 18.5.1999). This applies
to vehicle that may be used in Solo, RallyCross, High Performance Car Control Clinics, etc.
Therefore, it is highly recommended that full-face helmets not be used in vehicles with functional airbag systems. Potentially more restrictive language is currently being considered for 2005, which could appear in an early 2005 issue of FasTrack. If you have any questions, please contact the SCCA at
(800) 770-2055.

This references a study conducted by FIA, the Formula 1 sanctioning body, regarding the inclusion of airbags in Formula 1 cars. The study text can be found in this thread:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78914

However, that revised language seems to have never come out in SCCA rules:

According to someone in the Elise talk forum it was debunked

http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-18209.html

And according to the SCCA Solo Competition Manager:

"The experts will tell you airbags work very well for what they were designed (normal, everyday driving) and full-face helmets work very well in race cars (with no airbags). At this time, there is not much data to answer the questions concerning helmets during airbag deployments."
