Attention. Attention. Yoko Advan S4's blow ***** in packed snow. That is all.
Holy c**p. They are fine in the cold/wet and I didn't have any trouble with them last winter. And in the first 2 snow storms this year they were ok. But today, I guess the roads had more packed snow than usual, but goddamn... Understeered at 5mph through a gentle turn. Couldnt stop (literally) going down a moderate grade, long hill with a busy intersection at the bottom (Im sure the 4000lb curbweight helping me down didnt help) ending up in the opposing lane of traffic. And they are squirrely (is that a word?) under low speeds on packed snow.
Looks like I just found a set of tires to trash this summer at autoX.

That is why I have summer and winter tires, all season tires means compromise in all seasons, this
car deserves better. Never understood the logic of paying for a car like the RS4 and then compromising on the tires.

I have GY Eagle A/S's
it's been snowing and ~0 for the last couple of days...I've driven >300 miles...
they are fine...can't make them slip...
between awd, all sorts of mechanical and electronic traction aids, ABS, etc., the car is extremely safe...not to mention common sense and driver skill...
drove 30 miles on Tue night in freezing rain ~30F, no issues...
I lived in AK for 10 years, in anything but the Rockies, Canada, upstate NY, etc., snow tires are overkill...especially if you live in an urban area
I live in the mountatins and snowbelt...I'm guessing we have snow on the roads amybe 5 days a year...they clean and salt very fast...
the roads are dry/wet 95% of the time in the winter...imo the winter tires are the compromise, since the a/s's are better suited for the conditions the majority of the time...
pic taken as we speak...pretty heavy snow falling

Re: That is why I have summer and winter tires.....
the RS4 is not really an expensive car...
it is good value
my tires cost as much as snow tires, and since I run full summers in the summer, the $$$ arguement is moot...
EVERYTHING is a compromise...
on one of the many, dry, winter days with the temp ~40F, who is making the compromise?
the guy with a/s's or the winter tires?
the car 'deserves' nothing, it is an inanimate object...now the passengers, that's a different story...safety is paramount, and the driver is by far the largest variable in that equation...
so why don't you allow folks to make their own decisions based on their criteria/priority and stop ridiculing their judgement based on your opinion...
thnx

I agree in an area that gets cold but the roads are generally clear of snow I might run all seasons
during the cold weather and high performance summers in the warm weather. I use Dunlop M3's in the winter and in my opinion they handle as well as all seasons on dry roads. I just offered my opinion in the previous post and didn't feel that I ridiculed anyone. How am I not allowing folks to make their own decisions simply by posting my opinion? Didn't realize my opinions carried that much power.

Yes but
Don't worry.. I didn't take offense There are reason for everything and so there is a good reason I am running A/S instead of winter - primarily because when I was buying the tires (at the time the car was being delivered, which was Dec in Boston) I wasn't sure if I was moving to Florida or staying up here. I had to get something to get through the winter. Since I already had a set of summer tires (the OEM), it was either A/S or winters. If I got winters and moved to FL, I would have just pissed away a good chunk of money. Hence, the A/S. They allowed me to use the car in the winter plus they would have decent summer performance if I did move to FL. Now that I decided to stay up here, I want to change to winters as soon as I "use these up". Most of the time they are fine, in light snow/wet snow. Hell, on my signature pic I was out in 1 foot of snow and it was fine. But they are not great.. and today, they just outright sucked. Not sure why they were so bad today but fine downtown -perhaps ice under the snow out here in the suburbs? - (Let me tell you, sliding downhill towards a toyota camry not being able to stop even though you are only doing 2mph is not a good feeling).

It might be a function of tread wear.
The tread has lots of work to do on wide, low profile, 19's. They were probably fine when new but with some more miles on the tires, they are no longer up to the task.
