I don't know what the original manual says as I didn't look yet, but I do know that Audi has previously published an 8 liter number for the engine oil in some publications.
What Audi should really do is continually educate their dealers because the techs are constantly overfilling the crankcase. They are too lazy to stop at 10.5 and dump a whole 11 quarts.

Default Original Owners Manual Oil Capacity

My 2008 RS4 owner's manual states capacity is 10.1 qts (oil and filter).

My 07 Manual states 8.5 quarts. I put in around 9.5 to 10. Someone on Quattroworld was informed by a Audi Regional rep to make sure the oil is in the middle of the hash lines on the dipstick. If it's at the top of those markings the engine is overfilled which will contribute to carbon buildup.

I just looked and my 2007 manual also says 8.5 quarts with filter change. However, I do not agree that the crankcase is overfilled if the oil level is at the top of the full mark.

Default owners manual

does it sound reasonable that they increased the capacity in response to the carbon biuldup?

Well, they did not increase oil capacity. They just corrected a misprint in the owners' manual. Personally, I don't think engine oil has a direct correlation with the carbon buildup. The CB, is in the air intake manifold and is caused by burnt exhaust blow-by when the EGR valve opens its doors.

When my car is serviced, they always fill it to the halfway point on the hash marks on the dipstick. The low oil light comes on within 50 miles every time. The car will not leave me alone unless it is filled to the full line of the dipstick. A half a quart is worth not having to stare at the low oil light.
