Are B7 RS4 Dyno Numbers Really this low?
I am (seriously) an E39 M5 owner considering a move to an RS4. I have driven two (mildly) and have been very impressed. However, I have seen two sources now where the reported dynos are quite low:
1) Thread on this forum with BHP at 380-390
link: https://forums.audiworld.com/42v8/msgs/725.phtml
2)rototest received 345 WHP and 277 ft-lbs torque to the wheels
Link: http://www.rri.se/popup/performancegraphs.php?ChartsID=281&Flap=Overvi ew
This isn't real bad, but an E39 M5 (which is rated at 394 BHP (vs the RS4's 420) was tested on the rototest dyno at 359 WHP - this is 14 WHP more than the RS4 even though the RS4 should be coming out 20 HP (or so) more than the M5. ANd, the M5's dynoed wheel torque was 343 vs the RS4's wheel torque of 277.
I could have just stumbled upon some low dyno tests of the RS4 - I certainly hope this is the case. I have heard that the RS4 motors improve with miles, but I would hate to buy one with the "hope of advertised HP".
I welcome everyone's thoughts. Steve

let's all commit suicide right now.
you're comparing RWD numbers to AWD numbers, which is like....wrong or something. i'm sure lots of people who think it's important will clarify this in the ensuing melee that your post inevitably will start.

I think 359 WHP for a E39 M5 (stock) is about 30 hp too high....
On a dynojet which is usually generous, I saw 330 on a friends M5. I asked about other M5 and they showed a range about about 15 cars ranging from 310 to 335, nothing close to 359. Btw, at the same time I tested my SLK32 and saw 302.
Also, does comparing all wheel drive vs rear wheel drive rear HP make any sense. After all, the engine in the RS4 is powering 4 wheels while the engine in the M5 is powering just 2. I think comparing the Nurburgring times makes a lot more sense.

The driveline loss is more on the RS4 then the M5 and no one really knows truly by how much....
really an apples to oranges comparison.
Many tuners use 28% as a drive-line loss on quattro's if that helps.

It really doesn't matter what the numbers are......
There will be a 24-28% driveliness loss with AWD depending on the type of dyno. Don't worry, the AWD traction still puts the power to the pavement.
In the end, the bottom line is that this is a nearly 4000lb car that that do 0-60 in about 4.4sec. There must be just a little power there somewhere.

NO! Look above, they are even lower.
It still outruns cars with better numbers. Trust your "butt dyno" or better yet wait for a comparison test by a trusted magazine or TV show. One of the things a dyno never shows is how nice a car is to drive the way "YOU" drive it. It sounds lame but if you drive one you will probably buy one.

https://forums.audiworld.com/rs4b7/msgs/26271.phtml</a
