Best Drop-In Filter?
Hey guys,
I did some searching and found people discussing the CEL coming on with a K&N, but not anything specifically regarding any MPG increase or power increase from a simple drop-in filter. Anyone have anyone notice any difference in sound, power, etc after adding the filter? Or is this just a waste of my time and money? My brother has an E55 and everyone on his forum uses Green Filters, not K&N and swears by them.

I used cone filters and drop in K&N before on turbo'ed cars. Besides the noise that wore off after a week for the cone filters I did not feel anything. At least not without a custom tuning to take advantage to the increased air flow.
For the RS I bought and installed a Mahle air filter.
Make sure you vacuum the debris as well clean up the little "sock like" which in my case was full of debris. At 15.5k miles filter looked used thus suspecting it was never replaced before. Needless to say I did not feel any difference in performance.
Cheers

Nick,
Thanks for getting back to me. I have to take my car to the dealership to have the suspension replaced so they are just going to put in the K&N while it is there. I'll make sure they clean everything out. The manager there seemed to think that they were great filters.

All independent testing I have read shows the K&N do not filter dirt as much and lead to dirt buildup on the MAF - this has been interpreted as oil from what is used on the filter but that is not the case - it only appears as oil, testing confirmed it to be dirt. OEM appears to be the best for the car and the OEM box is what was being used by those racing the RS4 in Europe.
Just not worth the risk to use anything else for a minuscule amount of HP gain one might perceive from a filter change
