Default Break In Logic

I posted 2.5 months back that I had fully throttled my RS4 with less than 10 miles on the odometer. And I received numerous negative posts on my "abuse" of the car.

Well AW.com friends, I just had my 5K service performed and my tech informed me that I had a total loss of less than .5 qt over 4887 miles. Average speed 57.7. Average MPG 18.9.

Good luck following the Audi break-in guidelines. Or follow your instincts and drive.

Default Glad to hear it went well for you.

Too bad you didn't test the oil to see what it's state was, and what wear had occured. It would have made a good point of comparison with other engines.

Default Thanks. My dealer doesn't offer an oil analysis service.

I actually asked. But my service writer looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language.

All the best.

Default 18.9 MPG over 4887 miles? I hardly call that abuse.

I've got 3600 miles and only about 3/4 qt oil loss. Broke it in basically by the book and right after around the 2400 mile mark, I tracked it. Tracked it again at 3200. Hardly any oil lost after break-in and only very minimal oil consumption after abuse during a day of hot lapping.

So yes, I've had good luck following Audi break-in guidelines.... then I followed my instincts and drove the hell out of the car after doing so.

Fvck motoman, I still trust in the engineers who built the car.

Default I drove rountrip from Denver to SLC. Twice.

It's amazing the MPG gain on the West to East drive via I-80. Always a tail wind.

Best.

Default Oil consumption is probably more vehicle-specific rather than break-in-specific

Some will have issues and others will not.

Default either...

you're just periodically looking down and seeing 18.9 mpg or you're driving this car like a granny. Tell me for those who are posting greater than 16 mpg, are you just averaging on the audi trip computer, or are you dividing the miles driven (starting after a fillup to the next fillup) by the gallons filled at the next fillup? I've only averaged 11-13 mpg when doing the latter.

Default be honest now, there was more to it than just full throttle.

IIRC you reported taking the car up to its top speed, and wondered why it was limited to 130mph. But you deleted that thread. Undelete it and post the link if my recollection is inaccurate.

at any rate, I'm glad to hear that your oil consumption is that low.
