California emissions
Perhaps this is a remedial question - I've got a chance to pull an Avus RS4 from a California dealer (I live in Washington). Are California RS4s any different from cars made for the rest of the states or does a single RS4 version exist for all states? I'd hate to find out that I lost 10 HP due to additional vehicle emissions controls...

There are three "options" regarding emissions... [edit]
1) no special certification
2) 0LM - California Emissions
3) 1QE - Northeast Trading Region Emissions
My understanding is that these are just paper certifications and, as Alan said, all of the cars are the same.

Thanks; good to know...
I don't understand why car manufacturers don't just put all the necessary stickers/documentation on every car so they can be sold anywhere. Seems kind of inefficient to me...

They do...under the hood and/or in the doorjamb...
...somewhere there's a sticker in there saying the car is emissions-compliant in all 50 states.
The only cars/trucks not sold in all 50 states these days are diesels.

Do you know why there are the special certifications for CA and the NE?
Is it just an excuse for some states to collect an extra "tax" of some sort.

https://forums.audiworld.com/rs4b7/msgs/18064.phtml</a

I believe only Audi/VW shows this info on window stickers...
...not sure why. Perhaps because they are one of the only car companies (along with DaimlerChrysler) currently building vehicles that are not 50-state legal (diesel models).
I assume the "Northeast Trading Region" indicates Maine, Massachussets, New York and Vermont, as these states have adopted California's more strict emissions requirements.
Obviously "California Emissions" would be for California cars, with the third code for cars destined for the other 45 states.

not all cars can be sold in all 50 states, like the Audi TT...
According to Audi USA:
The 2006 Audi TT models do not meet California emission standards and cannot be sold in California or in those states that have adopted California emission standards, i.e., New York, Massachusetts, Vermont or Maine. TT models from model year 2005 and earlier may be available in these states through our Certified pre-owned program. Contact your dealer for more information.
