Those areas do not have clear coat, but I think wax is still the way to go

Rejex works well, any sythetic wax is
good too.I only use Rejex because I have the bottle out when using it on the black plastic trim.

Default the mirrors are plastic, not aluminum.

Der Kimbo broke one a couple years ago, and it's definitely plastic.

Default definitely...

if they were aluminum, they wouldn't put that painted finish on them.

This was a major disappointment of mine - didn't the B5 S4 have real aluminum mirrors?

i use zaino AIO as its a very mild polish and sealant in one. Its an anodized coating and once its marked theres nothing you can do about it (on the window trims, grill and mirrors plastic with coating as mentioned). Also added swissvax on top of this but only cause i had it out for putting on somewhere else at the time, but any wax would do too. ps be carefull what shampoo you use to wash the car with as it can have a very bad effect on the aluminium bits.

b5's had alumininum (mine 9/99 build) early on, then switched over, don't know when.
