Default Car and Driver review of the S5

Looks great, and the Car and BMW folks loved it. The interior is outrageous- Audi raised the bar even higher for this one.

Surprised by the acceleration. Rated at 354 hp, this car gets to 60 in 4.8 seconds and is a mere 0.2 seconds behind the RS4 in the quarter mile dash.

It's a bit lighter than the RS4, and the front axle is moved back to improve front/rear weight distribution. Handling improves accordingly.

Man, if the S5 is that fast, I simply cannot wait until they unveil the RS5. It should be an absolute killer.

Also saw that some dealers have a THREE YEAR waiting list for R8's. You guys see anything like that? Some metro areas supposedly have a 10:1 order to delivery ratio on the R8. And Audi was concerned that they couldn't sell a car for 118K....silly boys.

Build a beast, and they will buy it.

I'm not looking to trade the RS4 just yet- but if the RS5 is all that it's cracked up to be in spy shots and all, I may just have to pull the trigger in '09.

Default saw that...

generally a favorable review, but they did mention lack of excitement factor and also weight.

3800+ lbs for a coupe i think is too much.

Audi could really benefit by extensive use of lightweight materials...they're expensive enough as it is to justify it.

Default Yeah I was surprised at how glowing the article was. Sounds like a great car...

definitely not great enough to trade the RS4 for but I agree, it certainly makes me want an RS5 now.

In my area (Chicago), the wait for an R8 is approximately 1-2 years depending on the dealer. My dealer is confident that they will have an R8 allocation for me for delivery next fall, likely an '09 model. Not too bad considering I didn't decide I wanted one until about a month ago. They also suspect that one or two customers in front of me will probably pass when their number comes up either because they will wait longer for a V10 version or get something else. I think that in about a year, the demand will go down slightly and the wait list won't be as bad.

Default Lack of excitement compared to what?

Lack of excitement compared to the BMW 3 Series/M3? Well, obviously that is the case. That will most likely always be the case, I am afraid. Lack of excitement compared to the rest of the competition? Not on your life, buddy.

Honestly, the one and only complaint about how the car drives is the light, numb, over boosted steering. That will change enormously once the Audi Dynamic Steering (ADS), Audi Drive Select (also ADS) and Magnetic Ride System (MDS) become available as together only options in North America like these systems are together only options overseas. As Snoop Dogg's Huggy Bear character in the Starsky and Hutch movie (2004) would say, you dig (or ya' dig)?

Default their words, not mine...

i agree with you. seemed they needed something to pan.

the weight though, that is a legitimate complaint.

Default C&D listed it at 3800+, which would be heavier than those 2 cars...

but, i have seen varying curb weights listed...for all of them(MT's). 3800 is too heavy for a performance 2 seater, IMO. even if others suffer from the same heftiness. it really tends to compromise the sports car driving experience.
