Car lost power for a split second in second gear after a 7.5k shift from first to second.........
Friend outside the car said he thought he heard a pop or backfire. I turned the ESP off and tried it again with no problems. Any clue as to whether the ESP could cause a loss in power?

It was your ESP
If it detects even the slightest hint of slip, the car will feel like it "shut down" for a split second.
Personally, I turn on the S button and turn off the ESP every single time I get in the car, but then again, I've got a fair amount of racing experience under my belt.
