Default Changed spark plugs today

About 20K miles on the advice of Terry Dyson. He wanted me to pull them to see if they were fouled, so given the relative difficulty of the procedure I figured I might as well replace them with new.

This is a representative picture - they all looked very close to this. The top electrode is light gray, almost white. Seems like they look pretty good to me, but I'm no expert.

What do you guys think?

I've been using Shell V-Power (92 octane in the Northwest) and RLI Bio Plus fuel additive. Handy spark plug fouling chart below:

Spark plug chart

perfect plugs, but curious why the additive if you buy good fuel anyway?

Default Looks like some serious detnotation going on there.

Look under a magnifying glass...those little "beads" of material and pitting in the center electrode look like (from the picture) indications of some detonation. Difficult to tell from the picture, though.

Default Need to buy a better macro lens for my 40D some day

As far as I can tell there are no beads, just kind of rough orange peel surface. I think this is OK though.

Default Long story

Were you around for the all the oil and fuel additive related discussions about a year ago? Search the forum for RLI, renewable lubricants, and bio-plus.

In any case, Terry Dyson recommends RLI Bio-Plus to help with injector, upper cylinder and valve cleaning together with RLI 5w40 bio-syn oil (with custom additive package) to help fight fuel dilution we see in this engine.

Does all of this work? Well, in my experience I've seen wear go down significantly since switching to RLI 5w40 as well as a more stable oil that fights the deteriorative effects of fuel dilution. A number of us who have been using RLI Bio-Plus have been misfire-free (at least AFAIK).

Default "I've seen wear go down significantly"...care to elaborate on how you have determined this?

are we talking oil analysis?

Default Looks good

Also a good call to replace with new. The crush washers on the plugs are singe-use, so you're not really supposed to put a plug back in unless you replace the washer.
