Default I found the same in SoCal.

I picked up some 5w30 Syntec to top off until the 5w40 is readily available. I also checked with an oil distributor I deal with; he did not have it either.

Default I'm seeing 5W-40 only in Valvoline Synpower, off the shelf at Pep Boys...

in SF bay area. Autozone here has one 5W-40, but I can't remember which brand. It wasn't Valvoline.

Default I've got...

a couple cases of Valvoline 5W-40 Synpower sitting in my garage right now, that I bought at Pep Boys(SF bay area) a month ago for next oil change. 5W-40 still seems to be an atypical weight, unique to VW/Audi apps.

Default The owner's manual says on page 283

However, if engine oil viscosity grade SAE 5W-40 is not available, you can also use viscosity grade SAE 5W-30 or 0W40 as long as it meets Audi oil quality standard VW 502.00.

As long as you're just topping off your oil, it really won't matter. In the future, after the next change, just be sure to use the same oil as the fill. The easiest way to do this is to bring your own. That way you know exactly what is in the engine.

Default try Motul's 8100 5w40 which is Audi approved (502.00). here are a few local places in L.A.

that carry them. otherwise, PUREMS.com is a good online retailer that also stocks Motul fluids.
