Confused - How in the hell did a 5 series (E39) non-M5 keep up with 'us'?
Hi all.. maybe someone can help me out here ..
On the highway, from a ~75mph cruising speed, a 5 series came up behind pretty fast, so my 'friend' depressed the accelerator, matched the 5's speed, and tried to accel away. Surprisingly, the 5 stayed with 'him' neck and neck to ~120+ .. This was of course on an empty, straight race track. But thats not the point.
The 5 was debadged, but clearly was not an M (1 tailpipe set, square mirrors, etc.) But he at least had an exhaust. But to match the RS4 in high speed accel? I was VERY surprised...
Nice guy of course in the 5, gave a wave, but didnt get a chance to talk to him. I GUESS he could have had forced induction, but shy of that, is there any way?? With just exhaust and ?intake?chip ?

Yeh, "he"...meaning you can bet the 5 series did to be able gain on the RS4 like that...
it should have been no contest, especially if you saw him coming up from behind in plenty of time. Someone was caught with their revs way down, I think.
Now, if 'he' is really you, shame on you.

You're not totally broken in yet and you didn't push her up to 5500 rpm fast enough.
You need to keep the engine wound above 5500 and shift right before redline. When my car was around your mileage, a B7 S4 could pull me, if I was in the wrong gear. Below 5500 rpm the torque and HP of the RS4 is almost the same as the S4.

I wouldn't worry about it ..
An e39 540 (I'll assume that what it was) isn't faster than the RS4. There' an explanation somewhere. Either the 5er wasn't stock or the RS4 wasn't driven right. Like the others said, the RS4 isn't exactly a stump puller so you've gotta keeps the revs up.
