So I went with Bob's method. BTW, I believe RI RS4 may have first suggested de-flapping if we're looking for someone to blame.

I suppose the only drawback would be if you live in a warm climate or sit in traffic alot. With no cooling available from air movement thru the engine compartment, the extra airflow available thru the deflapped hole isn't exactly cool.

The 4.2FSI manual you referred to is very useful. I have a copy in PDF format, or I think Jenner has it hosted somewhere as a PDF.

when you do this mod how does it sound? do you notice the sound, is it like an intake growl or very subtle?
