Dear Abby: How do the rain sensing wipers work and where is the sensor located?

Abby called in sick after a booze soaked night out, let me help...
The sensor is an optic one (I think), located behind the rear view mirror. If you look at the windshield where it's mounted, you can see a small camera-like lens mounted directly to the glass. If it "sees" distortion it turns on the wipers.
It works well here in Los Angeles, but when I lived in Chicago, the GTI I had would get confused by a direct moth hit and engage the wipers, smearing it pretty nicely. Sweet.

Thanks.. I have to try to figure out why it isn't going off sometimes.. guess its not perfect :)
Sensitivity I assume refers to how sensitive it is to picking up the distortion and activating the wipers ? Or is it the maximum speed of the wipers.
