December issue of Motor Trend did the same exact comparo as C&D and yielded... the same result.
1st place: M3
2nd place: C63
3rd place: RS4
Findings were basically similar to what others in the media have been reporting. Close call, all great cars, can't go wrong with any of them, As usual, they were suspect on the M3's interior and lack of space (it's a coupe up against sedans) but in the end could care less because it handled best, understeered the least, and was the true driver's car. Also, they liked the RS4 for its sober elegance, best interior, and all-weather capabilities, and of course commented on how the C63 is the racer's choice (did they mean ricer's?) because nothing will touch it in a straight line, it sounded the best, and was the showiest ride of the bunch. Geez, I could've told you all that before even reading the article! Yet another predictably boring magazine comparo. Their summary statement for the RS4 reads: "All weather crowd-pleaser, ready for action, M3-fast; maybe just a bit too predictable." Hmm, just a bit too predictable? Isn't that a good thing? Again it's amazing how well the 2 year old RS4 has held up to the competition (who haven't even officially arrived yet) allowing the RS4 to step off the podium and retire as champion.
All in all, to me, it's another article that justifies my own reasons for moving on to an M3 after the RS4. It's not necessarily better, but I just need some fresh air.

But if its that close buying an M3 will..
be like going sideways, 10% fasterover 100mph big deal, when i upgrade to a new car i wont at least 30% better than the last, you have to go turbo something or porsche maybe , or GT-r 2009

If RS4 is so close, RS5 will be a notch up again.
As you said, this is still a bit of apples to oranges. The M3 is a 2 door with a very small back seat. Simply not an option for me. If you are going to have 2 useless seats, why not go to a 911?
The paddle shifter would be fun to try though. Both of these are just great cars. Except the Merc. The styling is too stodgy. The only Merc that moves me is the Black Series, and that thing is like 150k+.

OMG they should call it BMW Trend...
hehe, joking. I agree. What are people expecting on a platform that is 7 years old? That the RS4 seems to still be in very good company with 2 of the newest hottest small sports sedans speaks volumes.

Like my friend below said the RS4 is built on a 7 year old platform/chassis so please...
Stop saying the car is 2 years old when in reality its under pinnings are from the B6 era (2001MY).
If BMW can't do any better than this with a fresh new design then they slipping.

I think it's more of a backwards move.
when you think of the small gain in handling dynamics (debatable, unless you're a pro driving at 10/10ths), versus everything you lose (2 doors, a usable back seat, trunk space, AWD, and a much nicer interior)...doesn't make sense to me.
