Do you have to convert itunes files (mpeg-4 format) to mp3 for the SD to work?

Yeppers. Minimal quality loss for car audio IMHO so no biggy.
Burn protected AAC (Mpeg4) files to a disk then import from the same disk back into your library. Then convert said newly imported files to mp3. Doing that will 'undo' the AAC protection. Wham-O! Mp3's for the SD card.
It wastes a CD in the process but you can buy those in bulk fairly cheap.
Good luck.

Thanks, I found this procedure on a google search - CD burn is in process
Kind of stupid for apple to not let freely use content I purchase from them. Makes me want to go back to buying CDs screw apple.

tried that but got gaps at the beginning of songs...
I tried the soundtaxi trial but got empty space at the beginning of each song....is that just a function of the trial version and goes away with the purchased version?

Not sure in demo version, but in version I bought, I was getting "skips"
Then went back and changed settings to "Perfect quality" something ike 384 KPS transfer rate and eliminated the skips. Don't know if it will help you.

fixed it...I used NoteBurner instead
SoundTaxi was giving me a dead air pause at the beginning of each track. For a bit more money I went with NoteBurner, which installs a virtual CD driver to capture the burned tracks from itunes. Seems to give a more 'pure' conversion. Maybe it's just my computer, but it's working better for me.
