ECU upgrade ?
quoted from evo magazine:
An RS4-owning reader had tipped me off that an ECU upgrade was installed as a matter of course whenever an early car was presented for service, so I called Peterborough Audi and they confirmed the upgrade was available, free of charge.
The ECU upgrade was a while-u-wait affair taking about an hour. As I drove away, I recognised that the V8 had a much brighter, more willing mid-range, and the next morning it was a model of smoothness, the only disappointment being a reduced idling time with the valve open

The dealers were supposed to do a reflash with service
The reflash was supposed to correct a checksum error. My SA told me some had complained of worse performance after the reflash and he suggested just leaving it alone. Perhaps the ECU was just "reset" and the ECU had to relearn the driver's driving styles; but that would somewhat go against the idea of of your instantaneous improvement - unless you baby the car too much and the reset took you to a baseline that was more aggressive than your average driving style. I doubt the answer will be forth-coming from Audi.
