Decided to change the oil myself today, and I managed to wreck the oil filter housing cap.
For those of you who don't know, separating the filter from the filter housing cap is a pain in the ***. In my befuddlement I tried sliding a socket extender thru the center of the filter, to press the extender against the cap; I tapped on the extender in an attempt to "pop" the cap off.
Instead, I just punched out some kind of metal shield+spring assembly into the body of the cap.
I finally managed to get the filter off (by rocking the filter back and forth against the retaining cliips), but now I'm not sure if I can drive my car -- will have to order a new cap from the dealer I guess?

Thanks for the comments. Anyone know where i can get another one?
I will try the dealership service when they open tomorrow, but i am worried that they will have to ship the part from Neckarsulm or wherever.
I gotta imagine I'm not the only bonehead who managed to destroy the cap when trying to remove the filter. What a pain.

No, had to order.
$90 bucks, and had to wait 2 days for shipping from CA.
Tech at dealership said that the assembly I broke was just a valve that is pushed open in the (unlikely) event the oil filter is clogged. The car was safe to drive for a short time.
Finally got it replaced along with a new filter. WHAT a pain in the ***.
