How can you tell which threads you have previously read ?

How can you tell which threads you have previously read ?
Unless I'm just being dumb, how can you tell whether you have previously read a thread or not with the new system ? For me, the hyperlinks are black, regardless of whether you have visited them or not...
Also, it seems like a ton of the old threads have disappeared...

That's not what I'm talking about but it does help. Does the "new thread" icon stay until I actually read a thread ? I assume not, so if I read a thread today and then come back tomorrow, how can i tell if I read it yesterday ? Is it tracked some how ?

It should stay there until you read that thread. It will show if there's any new posts in a thread.
