Default How often to add oil?

So this is only my 2nd Audi...my first was a 07 A4 quattro automatic....I forgot about the need to add oil occasionally. I've heard different philosophies on the need to add oil to our cars. What's the general consensus? Since my last oil change(3,000miles ago)..my low oil light has come on twice....I've added a quart each time and the light goes off.

I've added a quart since that last time we both had to so I'm guessing it's normal.

Some of us have found that the engine seems to like to run at needing 1/2 qt. Add more and it will use it up but stay at the 1/2 level.

I have not needed to add any to my cars but then I don't drive that many miles

yeah I added a quart last week as well...Reggie when you say 1/2 do you mean when the light comes on, you add 1/2 a quart as opposed to a whole quart?

Some (mine included), tend to "throw" the first 1/2 quart. So keep it at the 1/2-way mark on the dipstick.

Ok...so if I keep it at 1/2 on the dipstick, will the light come on?

Sorry for sounding harsh, but this has been discussed on many audi forums. I don't understand why people don't check their oil with the dipstick. When you discover you are low on oil by your oil light going off, your oil level is at least 2 quarts below the top of the dipstick, and it should never get that low. The optimum range is shown by the hash marks on the dipstick, and should be kept in that range. These cars need the oil, 2 timing chains... need oil.
Everyone's car is different, so the amount of oil your car burns needs to be followed by you. If the amount changes over time where it starts burning more, there may be a problem. Also, some oils seem to be added more than others. What oil are you using, and what is your OCI?

No, of course not. If the light comes on, it's too late. You don't actually need to add oil until it's at or below the lower hash mark.
