Default I used the Pela oil extractor to change my oil today

I'm at 2100 miles and after reading about the oil degradation, I thought I should change my oil. I was able to get about 6.5 quarts of oil out and put in 7 quarts of fresh oil to refill and top-off the level.

Of course this in not an ideal change. The filter was not changed and I obviously left some old oil behind. Still, I figure this will be of partial benefit. FWIW, the oil on the dipstick after the change looked very clean.

Never having used the Pela extractor, I have to say it is very neat, quick and easy. The oil cost about $35 so it was a cheap change too.

Does anyone really know how much our total (not just changeable) oil capacity is?

Pela Pro 14 Liter Oil Extractor

Default specs say 8.5qts total capacity.

which seems to be in line with your project.

the one thing I've heard about not changing the filter is that it's imperative you use the same oil when you refill. just my recollection...not sure how or why it's important.

Default Hope it had Castrol Syntec 5w-40 in it then.

I haven't driven it since the oil change so I wonder if I ought to have the pros do a full change because there is no way I can reach the filter.

BTW, do you think the manual means there is 8.5 quarts we can get at or 8.5 quarts total?

Default I think that means 8.5 qts if you change the filter.

probably closer to 8 even if you do change the filter.

Default A quick Google search reveals...

Mixing oil brands may be less than optimal because each brand has it's own unique additives and they may not work as well in combination with the additives of another brand of oil.

It sounds fairly harmless in the very short term.

So, I'll get the oil and filter changed soon, find out the oil brand the dealer uses and do my future partial changes with the same stuff.

Thanks for the warning.

Default yeah, *personally* I wouldn't worry about it.

but having said that, I'm not going to worry about changing the oil until I hit 5K....so about 2k more to go.

Default additive clash is overrated and is really not an issue anymore

mixing oils is fine

Default I changed mine and it took 9.5 quarts...

Did it the old fashioned way and used the drain plug changed the filter. The filter is just as important as the oil IMO especially in a new engine...

And yes the original oil is breaking down early before the 5,000 mark. if you see a rise in oil temps... over 225ish then it is going downhill... but just my experience...

Default I disagree

if you're reusing the filter, the replacement oil should be the same...and I'm not the only one who believes this.

click
