997 GT3 was specifically redesigned by Porsche to more streetable than the 996 GT3....
it even has the fancy air suspension management crap to make an easier daily driver than the 996 version and as a result, It rides softer without sacrificing handling. The media has noted that basically it rides like a 997 Carrera S in the stiff setting which makes it a very adequate daily driver. So adequate in fact that Porsche found it necessary to develop a more raw and hardcore version more in line with the 996 GT3 if not moreso, and that would be the 997 GT3 RS.
The only reasonable rationale for the R8 then is if you have to have an Audi or must have AWD... and even then I'd sooner get a 997 Turbo or C4S or Targa 4S.

I'm sure the R8 will be a good car. However the GT3 is on another planet...
Every write up on it so far say it is the best GT3 ever. The British CAR magazine just wrote an article on it and they say the new GT3 is the best 911 ever, period.
They say the handling is out of this world. From the feedback to how it does what you want it to do. They actually say it is the best sports car out there right now. Comfortable on the road and a beast on the track.
They even had the chance to drive the GT3 RS and because it cost (IIRC) 14K pounds more than the regular GT3 they say you have to be really nuts to go for it. The RS as the same motor with the same performance numbers but Porsche decided to go with a single mass flywheel vs the dual type in the GT3. The RS is also lighter and the PASM was also retuned for even more aggressive driving. So yes the RS will be slightly faster and will corner at higher speeds generating higher G forces but it comes with a very big price tag.
