Just to reiterate...CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL!!!
I just passed 1300 miles and after reading the forum, I thought I should check my oil level....almost completely empty!!!!
I went to Valley Motors, and I must admit they were fantastic. They filled me up at no cost, washed the car, and after about 6 or 7 gawkers finished asking questions, I was off and much happier. The head service guy says that oil consumption should slow down after a few thousand miles.

Don't count on it slowing down after a few thousand miles...
there's a condition present which is allowing oil consumption and it's not likely to go away with time. That's an old Audi-Vw line of bull from VW models on up that have experienced excessive oil loss.

Service rep said the 4.2 could burn ~1qt per 1K miles when driven as designed (??)
I was three quarts low before the oil light came on in m S4 which had around 9K miles...It had been in a few times for service prior to the 5k so I never knew it was using oil that quick I added 4 more quarts before I traded in with 17K miles-Service rep suggested keeping a spare quart in the trunk, $6/qt Didn't mind paying for that spare...At least I got all of my tires for free.

Partial TJ: FWIW, I am at 62,000 on my '04S4, and have had no significant oil
consumption beyond the first 15K. Also, just back from Maine trip of 1250 miles, and did 22 mpg. (I drive at night to avoid traffic, and during ABS (Active Bambi Search), I tend to stay under 80, which helps with teh mileage.) Break in on both S4's was conservative, BTW, but did vary gears and did do compression braking, and always warm the beast up for a few minutes until it kicks down.

Come on. You guys aren't really having oil consuption problems on you new RS4s. This must be a joke?
Please don't get me started. But if you are using Audi's break in technique, IMHO, you are at risk for oil consumption issues.
