Let the aggrevation begin.....(kinda long)
Went by dealership yesterday to have new keys programed. While there, the svc mgr said that he could do an ecm software update recommended by audi, and that it would just take an extra half hr. This download was a result of a recall notice, so I figured OK. about 1 hr later the svc mgr comes out and says that the computer crashed my ecu, and they were trying to "telediagnose" it. Now looks like they are gonna have to order new ecu for the car. He did assure me no out of pocket expense, and provided a loaner. Has anyone heard about this updated software? Is it a bad idea? I just want to drive my car!!

Most people have done the update, its not the update
Don't worry, something just went wrong or your dealer screwed something up. I'm sure they will fix it, dont worry

email me your vin and i'll post the update.....
The half hour promise never happens... The update must be performed by a tech authorized to work on the car and they usually take 1 hr at least

they would've done the update at your first service regardless.
everyone here who has gone in to an audi dealership for the 5k service has had it done....and to my knowledge, no one has had any issues as a result. some idiot tech probably fried your ecu trying to update it.

I had never heard of the new software- until, like you, I took the car in for the 5K service. I figured it would take maybe 90 minutes- nearly four hours later, I asked what was going on, and I got the "we're downloading new software for the ECU" answer. Took like two hours just to do that. I'm not sure what the hell it's for, but it took a long time, doesn't seem to make any difference for anything...but at least they didn't crash the ECU.

That may well have been along the lines of what happened...
I know my car was later communicating info to some remote "telediagnostic" device. Who knows. I'm not too worried, but like I said, I just want to drive the thing--only owned it for a week This too will pass. Maybe they won't charge me for the key activations...yeah right.
