Lifetime air filter according to the Bentley service manual
Personally, I change mine at about 10,000 mile intervals. But the 2007 maintenance schedule in the Bentley repair manual mentions cleaning the intake "snow screen" (which gets dirty real fast and if you haven't checked yours, you should!) and also replacing the dirt/pollen filter, but never mentions the engine air filter. An oversight, or is the ECU relied on to trip a code when the filter needs replacing? Wierd.

Air filter change interval is 35K miles. Sparkplugs are 55K

In my area, with all the sand and silt, I'll be changing my air filter every 15K miles.

I'm looking at my Bentley manual right now...at 35k it says clean housing and replace air filter.
it's in a box of items with the heading 'Additional Maintenance Items' under the 35,000 service.
do you have the latest Bentley update?...mine is version 3.0.2

Not me.
K&N are great, until you service them wrong. Their's plenty of air flow through the stock filter. Right now I'm more concerned about that silly air intake butterfly. No air filter element can make up for it being closed.

It depends
As long as the engine only needs as much air as an S4 V8, then it is "just" an auxiliary source of air. But, when you open the RS4 engine up with the S4 airbox, there is just not enough flow. The butterfly is supposed to open at that point to provide more air. Another way to to look at it, however, is to say that it removes an air restriction. More flow = less pressure differential = less restriction.

Re: It depends
okay, makes sense. have you been able to nail down yet whether it's always supposed to open at certain engine/car speed? if it's not consistent there, kind of defeats the purpose.
i'm still wondering if air temp comes into play. i think Elevens has mentioned it's location near the exhaust manifold. is it possible that it is being overridden if source air is too hot? you don't want that dumping into a high revving engine, IMO.
