A lot of heat generating from under the steering column....anyone else?

A lot of heat generating from under the steering column....anyone else?
When I'm driving my car on average warm days 75-80 degrees and I'm not running the a/c I have noticed my car generates a ton of heat from under the steering column. When I turn the a/c on it seems to coold it down. Anyone experiencing the same thing?

i would think possibly an open flap letting heat thru when it shouldn't be. however, if you run/leave on auto mode, you will get this...as the the unit will constantly attempt to maintain a selected temp setting.
